PW 43 - 14 ½" Schoenhut Girl ~ Classic Period ~ Doll 308

This Schoenhut wooden doll is from their 'Classic Period' (1912-1916), and was designed by Mr. Leslie. It has the embossed stamp on the back "Schoenhut Doll / Pat. Jan. 17. 11. U.S.A. / Foreign Countries". She is in excellent condition with only an old chip on her nose, and a couple of paint flakes on the back of her torso...no cracks or chips to the wood, and her joints are all strong with good spring tension. Carol Corson says in her book..."if one could only have only one Schoenhut, this is probably the one to go for". She has an alert, sensitive and intelligent face. She has her original union suit of underwear (with a few holes) and has been redressed some time ago in a darling dropped waist pink and white check cotton dress with smocking and a matching hat, pink stockings and old black shoes. She is a darling doll of a nice small size...ready to play with or display...these dolls are so pose-able you will really want to play with her!

She is priced very reasonably at $925.00.

PW 42 - 6 ½" Finely Detailed Black Cloth Doll

This is a beautifully made black cloth doll...all of 6 ½" tall! I have been told that these were made in either Spain or France in the 20's...they represent people of their colonies...I have white, black, mulatto, and Hispanic types in my own collection...many I've had have been dressed in religious habits...both priests and nuns...hence a Catholic origin. They have all been about the same size, and always have leather hands...the rest being cloth...with needle sculpted and embroidered faces. They seem to be entirely hand sewn...bodies as well as clothing. This lady has braids that are tied together in the back, a blouse with banded cuffs and neckline, pantaloons, petticoat and skirt (bloused and tied at the waist). On her head she carries a bundle tied in pretty fabric. She has bead earrings and a silk crepe scarf. Her body is shapely and proportional with breasts, slender waist and rounded hips and thighs. Sometimes they have little leather shoes, but she is a barefoot country lady!

She is priced at $75.00.

PW 29 - 7" Pr. German Cloth Dolls ~ WW II, ca. 1946

Here is a darling 7" pair of cloth dolls from Germany. According to Madeline Merrill, in her book "The Art of Dolls: 1700-1940", on the last page she has photographed a 10" version of the girl. Her description says "Relief Doll - WW II, ca. 1946. Cloth with stockinet limbs. Handmade, 10" girl doll in ethnic dress. Sent from Germany to a women's group of the Lynnhurst, Massachusetts Methodist Church in appreciation of clothing packages - a common practice in churches following WW II. The features of the stitch-molded stockinet head are embroidered with the exception of painted lashes and brows." This pair are as described except only the brows are painted...lashes are embroidered. Both have black bead eyes...hers are small and his longer. Also, only the heads and arms are stockinet...the bodies and legs are fine cotton. Her hair is cotton yarn (soft twine) and his is velvet I think. Clothing is cotton, wool and silk. The arms have a thin wire armature and it has worn through at the end of his left hand and her right hand...this could be carefully stitched to enclose the wire again. Her white wool stockings have a run (hole) on her left leg...hardly shows as her legs are light also...could be mended too. They are a very cute pair of dolls, and it's nice that they have an interesting history!

The pair is priced at $95.00.
