29 - 7" Pr. German Cloth Dolls ~ WW II, ca. 1946
Here
is a darling 7" pair of cloth dolls from Germany. According
to Madeline Merrill, in her book "The Art of Dolls: 1700-1940",
on the last page she has photographed a 10" version of the
girl. Her description says "Relief Doll - WW II, ca. 1946.
Cloth with stockinet limbs. Handmade, 10" girl doll in ethnic
dress. Sent from Germany to a women's group of the Lynnhurst,
Massachusetts Methodist Church in appreciation of clothing packages
- a common practice in churches following WW II. The features
of the stitch-molded stockinet head are embroidered with the
exception of painted lashes and brows." This pair are as
described except only the brows are painted...lashes are embroidered.
Both have black bead eyes...hers are small and his longer. Also,
only the heads and arms are stockinet...the bodies and legs are
fine cotton. Her hair is cotton yarn (soft twine) and his is
velvet I think. Clothing is cotton, wool and silk. The arms have
a thin wire armature and it has worn through at the end of his
left hand and her right hand...this could be carefully stitched
to enclose the wire again. Her white wool stockings have a run
(hole) on her left leg...hardly shows as her legs are light also...could
be mended too. They are a very cute pair of dolls, and it's nice
that they have an interesting history!
The
pair is priced at $95.00.
